What your BMI actually says

Body mass index, body fat, ideal weight and resting metabolic rate — with the Asian cut-offs alongside the international ones.

How these are worked out

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The bands are the WHO international cut-offs, and because the Asian cut-offs (23 and 27.5) are the ones usually applied to South Asian bodies, both readings are shown. Body fat uses the Deurenberg equation, ideal weight the Devine formula, and resting metabolic rate Mifflin–St Jeor, which predicts better than the older Harris–Benedict.

What BMI cannot see. It knows your height and your weight and nothing else — not muscle, not bone, not where fat sits. A muscular person reads high and a sedentary person with little muscle can read normal while carrying more fat than is healthy.

This tool gives an estimate for general information. It is not a diagnosis and it does not replace advice from a doctor or a dietitian — particularly if you are pregnant, under 18, an athlete, or managing a health condition.
